Your car has a number of electrical systems. A battery-starter circuit turns the engine over when you twist the ignition key. A high-voltage ignition system creates the arc at the spark plugs. There’s a system for recharging the battery once the engine’s started. Myriad circuits run through the vehicle for lights, various motors, and on newer vehicles, computers. And of course, a hybrid vehicle takes electrical systems to a whole other level of complexity.
These electrical-systems are largely maintenance-free. The exception is anything that directly involves the battery. Car batteries don’t last forever. In fact their typical life is around three to four years. If yours is older than that, it’s time for a replacement before you get stranded!
Starter motors, solenoids and alternators are major electrical components that all wear out eventually, and all have the potential to leave you stranded. As your car ages you might also think about having these replaced as a preemptive measure.
A bad battery is probably the most obvious electrical problem you’ll encounter, but issues can range from a blown bulb to an intermittent misfire. (And a misfire will light your “Check Engine” light.) At FrankLynn Automotive our skilled technicians have state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and the experience to quickly get to the root of any problem. The range of electrical services we provide includes:
- Battery testing and replacement
- Charging system evaluation
- Starter motor and solenoid replacement
- Ignition fault diagnosis
- Bulb replacement
Electrical faults range from the mildly irritating to problems that leave you stranded at the side of the road. Often the cause is something as simple as a loose cable or a corroded connection. If your car isn’t running the way you think it should, make an appointment with us and we’ll take a look.
