The drivetrain transfers power from the engine and transmission to the wheels. Depending on the vehicle, it may include the driveshaft, axles, CV joints, universal joints, differential and transfer case. The suspension supports the vehicle, manages wheel movement and helps keep the tires in contact with the road. Although these systems perform different jobs, problems in either can cause vibration, noise or poor handling.
Common warning signs include excessive bouncing, a rough or unstable ride, clunking over bumps, nose-diving during braking, leaning in turns, uneven ride height and unusual tire wear. The vehicle may also wander, feel difficult to control or pull to one side. Similar symptoms can be caused by tires, alignment or steering components, so an inspection is needed before assuming the shocks or struts require replacement.
