Frequently Asked Questions:

Common warning signs include knocking or tapping noises, loss of power, rough idling, stalling, difficult starting, excessive oil consumption, fluid leaks or unusual exhaust smoke. An illuminated check-engine, oil-pressure or temperature warning light also requires attention. These symptoms can originate from the engine or from related fuel, ignition, cooling, exhaust or electrical systems, so diagnosis should occur before repairs are recommended.

The process depends on the vehicle and symptoms. It may include retrieving diagnostic trouble codes, reviewing live vehicle data, checking fluid levels and condition, inspecting for leaks, and testing ignition, fuel, compression or cooling-system operation. Intermittent concerns may require additional testing or a road test. A computer scan supplies useful clues, but it is not a complete engine diagnosis by itself.

Yes, especially if the sound is new, loud or becomes more frequent. Possible causes include low oil level, inadequate oil pressure, ignition-related detonation, worn valvetrain parts or internal bearing damage. Some fuel injectors and other components normally produce light ticking sounds, so the noise should be evaluated before assuming the engine has major internal damage. If the oil-pressure light accompanies the noise, shut off the engine as soon as it is safe.

Reduced power may result from ignition misfires, restricted airflow, fuel-delivery problems, exhaust restrictions, sensor faults, overheating or mechanical wear. Some vehicles intentionally limit power to protect the engine or transmission after detecting a serious fault. Because replacing individual parts without testing can become expensive quickly, the vehicle’s codes, operating data and mechanical condition should be evaluated first.

Oil loss can occur through an external leak or internal consumption. External leaks may develop around gaskets, seals, the oil pan, filter or other components. Internal consumption may involve piston rings, valve seals, the crankcase-ventilation system or turbocharger when equipped. Some engines consume a limited amount of oil between services, but a sudden increase, visible smoke or repeatedly low oil level should be investigated.

Blue or gray smoke may indicate that engine oil is entering the combustion process. Persistent white smoke after the engine is warm may suggest coolant entering the engine, while black smoke can indicate an overly rich fuel mixture. Brief vapor during cold weather can be normal condensation. Smoke color alone cannot confirm the cause, but heavy smoke, overheating or rapid fluid loss requires immediate attention.

Pull over safely and shut off the engine. Continuing to drive can damage the cylinder head, head gasket, pistons or engine block. Never open a radiator or pressurized coolant cap while the engine is hot. Overheating may be caused by low coolant, a leak, faulty thermostat, damaged cooling fan, failing water pump or another problem. AAA advises shutting the engine off when the temperature gauge reaches the hot zone.

The best option depends on the diagnosis, extent of damage, vehicle value, mileage, overall condition, parts availability, and expected ownership period. A targeted repair may be appropriate when damage is limited to a specific component. Extensive internal damage may make rebuilding or installing a replacement engine more practical. The estimate should explain what is included, the source and condition of the engine, applicable warranty coverage, and any related components that need attention.

Stop driving when it is safe if the oil-pressure or overheating warning appears, the check-engine light flashes, the engine begins knocking loudly, heavy smoke develops or the vehicle loses substantial power. A major oil, fuel or coolant leak also warrants stopping. Continuing to operate the vehicle under these conditions can increase damage or create a safety risk. AAA identifies thick white smoke and severe overheating symptoms as reasons to pull over and arrange assistance.

Franklynn Automotive provides engine diagnostics, maintenance, repairs and engine-replacement services for drivers in Littleton, Highlands Ranch and nearby communities. If the engine is making unusual noises, losing power, leaking fluid or displaying a warning light, schedule an appointment so the cause can be identified before a repair plan is recommended.
